Riders raise funds: The Moonshiners Motorcycle Club held a fundraiser May 26 for the Wounded Warriors Project. About 70 riders participated. They raised $600. The ride started and ended at Kiel’s Taverne Sports Grille in Somerset.

Kiel’s Taverne Sports Grille celebrated their first anniversary under the new ownership of Brian and Deanna Kiel in February 2010 with the distinction of Daily American’s 2010 Readers Choice for Best Bar/Pub in Somerset County. Since 1983, Brian served as a cornerstone of the Somerset community, and Kiel’s Taverne continues his tradition with delicious new menu items and the perfect atmosphere to watch your favorite sports teams. Every Tuesday night at Kiel’s Taverne, customers enjoy mouth-watering Wing Night and live acoustic entertainment from across the region. Every weekend, Kiel’s Taverne hosts the area’s most popular bands and musicians in both the upstairs bar and on the basement stage. The recently revamped menu boasts all the food Somerset has come to expect and love from the Kiel family, including a wide selection of savory strombolis, burgers, salads, sandwiches and Brian’s signature specialty hand-tossed pizza. The spacious renovated downstairs bar accommodates over two hundred additional patrons, offering a great location for private parties, banquets and other events. With high-definition TVs, pool tables, ample parking, and plenty of room to relax with your family and enjoy food, sports, and spirits, Kiel’s Taverne Sports Grille is the place to be in Somerset County.
Kiel’s Taverne Sports Grille has become notable for being one of the area’s great places for entertainment and social events in recent years.
The tavern regularly hosts popular bands and musicians while providing a venue for fundraisers, banquets and other events.
Owners Brian and Deanna Kiel have been honored with several public awards including the Daily American’s 2010 Readers Choice for Best Bar/Pub in Somerset County.
The tavern is divided into two distinct areas. The upstairs bar and lounge is filled with large flat-screen televisions surrounding a central brass-accented bar.
Pool tables and other tavern games find space among a mix of high bar tables and standard dining room tables. Dark wood accents are common, giving the place a comfortable feel.
The downstairs room is the size of a small banquet hall where large numbers of people can mix for formal functions or congregate along the long bar while listening to a favorite band.
We concentrated on the dining side of the tavern which was filled with a mix of people watching weekend sports or dining in small family groups. Everyone seemed friendly and companionable, adding to the positive atmosphere.
We liked the look of the top-side bar a lot. The televisions were all placed at angles that allowed someone sitting at a table to catch two or more programs at once. When watching sports it’s always nice to be able to catch multiple games.
The staff is also friendly and welcoming.
Looking over the menu is to see a lot of familiar faces. The standard bar items make up the majority of the menu. Pizza, appetizers and sandwiches dominate, leaving a few Italian specialty entrees like Spaghetti, Manicotti, Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan for the entree section.
The dinners were all served with a garden salad (all dirt-grown stuff as one described it) and garlic bread.
The low prices on the entree side immediately caught our eye. The most expensive items on the menu are the large specialty pizzas with the Buffalo Chicken, Taco, White and Barbecue Chicken styles all coming in at that price range.
The appetizer side of the menu is filled with items like Wings, Boardwalk Fries, Jalapeno Cheddar Poppers, Breaded Zucchini, Provolone Cheese Sticks, Seasoned Curly Fries with Cheese, Fried Cheese Raviolis and a Basket of Shrimp.
The fact that the most expensive item was the basket of shrimp once again pushed home the fact the tavern is very reasonably priced.
The salad section is filled with items like the Steak Salad, Chicken Salad and Tuna Salad. The sandwich section has a bit more diversity with more than a dozen items to choose from including an 8 ounce Burger, 10 ounce Beer Battered Haddock, Cheese Steak, Hot Spicy Pig and a Ham & Cheese either on a pretzel roll or regular bread.
Being completely honest here, that’s nothing exciting about this menu. But I rather think that’s the point. Kiel’s seems to have a pretty strong grasp on what their clientele wants not only in the way of food, but in atmosphere, entertainment and service.
I think they do a very good job at meeting those needs and being the restaurant model that they want to be. You can’t fault them for that and in that sense leads to a very positive review.
Eating through the menu yielded very few surprises, but there are a few items we should talk about.
The taco pizza was a bit fun with lettuce, tomato, onion, ground beef, nacho cheese all layered on the pie. There was also a side of salsa and sour cream if you wanted to take the taco experience all the way down the pike.
The white pizza also surprised by being, well nothing like any white pizza I’ve ever eaten. OK, I’ve had some interesting variations, but let me say that I’m a New York style traditionalist when it comes to white pizza.
We’re talking thin crust, ricotta cheese, olive oil, garlic, onion, thyme, a little parsley and black pepper for me, thank you very much and fuggedabout all those over toppings.
That’s not to say I haven’t had a few enjoyable variations over the years, but in my head I’m walking down the street eating my greasy slice and feeling the air coming up from a subway tunnel as I pass.
The tavern keeps the ricotta cheese base and the garlic and the onion while adding tomatoes, bacon and mild pepper rings. The crust is thick and needs to thick in order to balance the toppings out.
Another item caught me slightly off-guard, but really shouldn’t have in retrospect. The tuna salad was actually tuna salad on a bed of garden greens with mild pepper rings, tomato and onion.
Good stuff, but I tricked myself into thinking it was going to be sliced tuna grilled or seared and placed on a different variety of vegetables or Thai noodles or something.
That’s too much city living for you. The tavern’s style was good and kind of a nice throw back. Salads are served with garlic bread by the way.The wing flavors we tried included the Hot Pepper Mustard and the Sweet & Hot. We really enjoyed the later’s balance.
We tried many of the menu items and am happy to say that they were good and met expectations. They stuck to the traditional for the most part and satisfied with helping size and flavorings. The kitchen did a great job of getting food out properly cooked and in a timely fashion.

NASCAR RIDERS IN TOWN
Two well-known NASCAR names participated in a motorcycle ride through Somerset Sunday afternoon. Kyle Petty and Jeff Bodine were two of about 150 riders on about 100 bikes that are traveling from Lake Placid, N.Y., to Amelia Island, Fla. The 2011 Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America is trying to raise awareness and funds for several causes including Victory Junction, a camp for chronically ill children founded by the Pettys in honor of their late son, Adam. Brian and Dee Kiel, of Kiel’s Taverne Sports Grille in Somerset, donated lunch to riders in support of their efforts. Kiel’s son Nicholas, 10, pictured trying on a helmet with horns, has had multiple heart operations. The other photo is of Kyle Petty standing beside an old photo of him that is in Kiel’s tavern. The public can donate $10 to Victory Junction by texting the word “ride” to 27722.
